About PanAfGeo

Pan-African Support to Geological Sciences and Technology Africa-EU Partnership (PanAfGeo-2)

Pan-African Support to the EuroGeoSurveys – Organisation of African Geological Surveys (EGS-OAGS) Partnership (PanAfGeo)is a project that supports the training of geoscientific staff from African Geological Surveys through the development of an innovative training programme that includes the acquisition and development of important professional skills to complement their technical capabilities and qualifications.

The training programme is implemented by world-class geoscientific experts coming both from African and European Geological Surveys. PanAfGeo-2 is a continuation of the well-established PanAfGeo Project. The PanAfGeo-2 actions are based on and implemented through trainings done in different geoscientific domains. These trainings will be delivered in face-to-face form, field trips and on-the-job sessions, depending on the respective thematic areas.

PanAfGeo-2 also aims to support capacity building at a political, institutional and technical level in Africa by focusing on georesources goverance. By involving management level, senior African geoscientists and leaders we will improve the overall system at national, continental and international level, in particular by boosting Africa-EU synergies. All activities of PanAfGeo-2 shall reinforce the governance and sustainable management of georesources within the African-EU Partnership.

PanAfGeo-2 covers the entirety of the African continent with a specific focus on those countries having a natural wealth of mineral resources. The project is committed to supporting the Organisation of African Geological Surveys (OAGS) and its member organisations as well as relevant governmental bodies such as mining authorities and geological research bodies (e.g. universities, research centres).

PanAfGeo-2 is implemented through a project consortium, coordinated by the Geological Survey of France (BRGM), and including 11 European Geological Surveys and EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) together with the Organisation of African Geological Surveys (OAGS) and African Geological Surveys. PanAfGeo-2 is part-funded by the European Commission (Directorate-General of International Partnerships).

EuroGeoSurveys – The Geological Surveys of Europe (EGS)

EuroGeoSurveys is a non-profit organisation of the Geological Surveys of Europe, the national institutions responsible for geological inventory, monitoring, knowledge and research.

For 50 years the main objective of EuroGeoSurveys has been to contribute to society’s welfare. We turn geoscientific information into European wide knowledge, technologies and services easily accessible and beneficial to society and economic growth.

Our principal purpose is to provide public Earth science knowledge to support the EU’s competitiveness, social well-being, environmental management and international commitments’.
In our day-to-day activities, we promote the contribution of geosciences to European Union affairs and action programmes; provide a permanent network between the Geological Surveys of Europe and a common, but not unique, gateway to each of the Members and their national networks; jointly address European issues of common interest in the field of geosciences; and publish technical advice for the European Union Institutions.

EGS only pursue activities that lie exclusively in the public interest or in the interest of public administration that will benefit from our ability to quickly respond to specific demands from the European Union, addressing geological problems of a political, economic and social nature.

The Organisation of African Geological Surveys (OAGS)

The Organisation of African Geological Surveys (OAGS) represents the Geological Surveys of countries in Africa.

The mandate of OAGS is to foster and sustain geoscience programmes and excellence on the African continent in the quest for socio-economic development and poverty alleviation, with special reference to mineral resource assessment, sustainable land use and development, hazard mitigation and environmental protection. The specific aims of the organisation include, but are not limited to, creating regional- and continent-wide promotional maps and documents that inform decision-makers in government and industry on matters relating to the applied geosciences.

The vision of OAGS is to be a leader in supporting the Geological Surveys in Africa through provision of information, capacity building and technology transfer.

The mission of the OAGS is to provide comprehensive information, support and capacity building to geological surveys across Africa and to assist member countries in their development through the establishment of information sources and means of technology transfer for their own use and for the attraction of investment and establishment of greater public and government understanding of the strategic importance and offerings of the geological surveys.

The OAGS Presidency is currently held by the representative from Senegal and the regional Vice-Presidency which consists of:

  • Northern Region: Algeria
  • Southern Region: Namibia
  • Eastern Region: Uganda
  • Central Region: Central African Republic
  • Western Region: Burkina Faso

South Africa is the permanent Secretariat of the OAGS.
