PanAfGeo+ (2025-2029) – Pan-African Support to Geological Sciences and Technology – is the European Union’s flagship programme supporting the strengthening of geoscientific capacities across Africa. Implemented under the EU Global Gateway, PanAfGeo+ promotes cooperation, knowledge exchange and dialogue between African and European geoscientific institutions.
Building on earlier PanAfGeo phases, PanAfGeo+ responds to evolving priorities by combining capacity building, institutional partnerships, and investment-oriented dialogue. The programme supports African geological institutions in enhancing geoscientific knowledge, services and governance, contributing to sustainable development, responsible resource management and informed decision-making.
PanAfGeo+ delivers its activities through a combination of:
- targeted training and professional development for geoscientific staff,
- peer-to-peer knowledge exchange between African and European experts,
- dialogue and cooperation at technical, institutional and policy levels.
Training and capacity-building activities are delivered by experienced geoscientific professionals from African and European Geological Surveys and partner institutions. Activities are implemented through face-to-face sessions, field-based learning, and practical, work-oriented formats, depending on thematic needs.
A key feature of PanAfGeo+ is the use of Country Windows, which allow participating countries to tailor activities to national priorities while remaining aligned with the overall programme framework. Through this approach, PanAfGeo+ strengthens national ownership, regional coherence and continental collaboration.
PanAfGeo+ operates across the African continent and supports geological institutions and stakeholders involved in geoscience, natural resource governance, environmental protection and sustainable development. The programme contributes to reinforcing Africa–Europe cooperation in geosciences and to strengthening the role of geological knowledge in development, policy and investment processes.
