Training description

About PanAfGeo+

“PanAfGeo+” for “Pan-African Support to Geological Sciences and Technology, Africa-EU Partnership” is a project which supports the training of geoscientific staff from African geological surveys through the development of an innovative training programme. This programme includes the acquisition and development of important professional skills that complement existing qualifications and technical skills. The training programme is carried out by world-class geoscientific experts coming from African and European geological surveys.

PanAfGeo+ is funded by the European Commission (DG INTPA). The consortium of PanAfGeo+ consists of EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) and Organisation of African Geological Surveys (OAGS) coordinated by the French Geological Survey (BRGM). This programme allows trainees to acquire a state-of-the-art tool kit that contains methods and/or field work from eight geoscientific domains or work packages.

WP6 – Geoscientific Information Management

Geological data, including maps and inventories of mineral resources, provide the foundation for assessing the potential of mining projects and granting exploration and mining licences. Comprehensive geological and mineral resource databases enable governments to make informed decisions and strengthen their capacity to negotiate sustainable mineral prospecting and exploration agreements with both local and international investors.

Within PanAfGeo+, WP6 – Geoscientific Information Management aims to strengthen the capabilities of professionals working in African Geological Survey Organisations who are involved in geoscientific information management and related information technologies. The training focuses on operational-level skills while taking into account local contexts and long-term sustainability.

WP6 is coordinated by the French Geological Survey (BRGM) in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Burkina Faso (BUMIGEB) as co-leader. Technical and scientific support is provided by BRGM, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), the Geological Survey of Slovenia (GeoZS), and the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (LNEG) in Portugal.

The training will have a strong practical component, with each topic followed by exercises and hands-on activities. Trainers will use prepared datasets to demonstrate concepts related to spatial analysis, data management, database construction, and remote sensing data processing. Participants will work with real-world datasets and apply the acquired knowledge to practical case studies. Where appropriate, content areas may also be delivered collaboratively by multiple trainers.

Who Can Apply?

The training session is open to all individuals eligible under the PanAfGeo Trainee Charter.

To successfully follow the topics covered in WP6-2-EN – Acquisition, Processing and Management of Spatial Data with Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Databases (Basic Level) and fully benefit from the training, applicants should demonstrate the following qualifications and experience:

  • Training in the field of geosciences;
  • Proven knowledge and practical experience in geoinformation (GIS, spatial databases, and remote sensing);
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and software within a Windows environment.

Important Notes

  • The Letter of Commitment must be officially approved and signed by the management of your institution.
