The PanAfGeo+ Country Window Rwanda project aims to improve public safety in the face of natural and artificial geohazards induced by human activity. Scientific and technical cooperation encompasses three primary research areas: (1) inventory and monitoring of areas at risk of mass earth movements, primarily landslides; (2) monitoring of seismicity in Rwanda, which is induced in the western branch of the East African Rift Valley; and (3) inventory and evaluation of mining waste dumps associated with ASM of cassiterite and coltan deposits.
The work being carried out in Rwanda is being conducted by teams consisting of employees from the RMB and other government institutions responsible for the geohazards mitigation, as well as specialists from PGI-NRI, supported to some extent by specialists from GeoZS (Slovenia). Training of RMB geologists in Poland and the purchase of specialized equipment necessary to better monitor geohazards occurring in Rwanda are also planned.
The implementation of the CW Rwanda Project should enable the RMB to conduct fully independent work aimed at monitoring and counteracting geohazards, effectively manage its databases and present research results internationally, which is of great importance, especially in relation to threats related to seismic activity with a supra-regional scope.
