The second training session of PanAfGeo-2 WP-B, dedicated to “Mineral Resources Assessment,” took place in Quelimane, Mozambique, from 19th to 29th June 2023. Attended by 20 participants from five African Portuguese-speaking countries, including Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Cabo Verde, and São Tomé & Principe, the event fostered collaborative efforts among PALOP nations. Co-organized by LNEG, Portugal, and Mozambique’s INAMI and DNGM, the training aimed to strengthen geological knowledge and sustainable mineral resource management in the region.

During the ten-day program, participants engaged in classroom-type sessions, field visits, and practical exercises focused on exploring the theme of lithium-rich pegmatites in the Alto Ligonha region. The training provided valuable insights into mineral exploration techniques, including the usage of portable XRF and gamma ray spectrometers for data interpretation. Discussions on circular economy principles and responsible production underscored the importance of conserving resources and protecting the environment. Additionally, the global market dynamics for raw materials and the impact of geopolitical events on mineral prices were explored. As the training concluded, certificates were awarded, and participants were encouraged to foster future cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and energy transition in African countries. The training’s success highlights the PanAfGeo-2 WP-B’s commitment to fostering sustainable mineral resource management across the PALOP community.
