TRAINING // WP2 – Mineral Resources Assessment
May 4 - May 15
About PanAfGeo+
“PanAfGeo+” for “Pan-African Support to Geological Sciences and Technology, Africa-EU Partnership” is a project which supports the training of geoscientific staff from African geological surveys through the development of an innovative training programme. This programme includes the acquisition and development of important professional skills that complement existing qualifications and technical skills. The training programme is carried out by world-class geoscientific experts coming from African and European geological surveys.
PanAfGeo+ is funded by the European Commission (DG INTPA). The consortium of PanAfGeo+ consists of EuroGeoSurves (EGS) and Organisation of African Geological Surveys (OAGS) coordinated by the French Geological Survey (BRGM). This programme allows trainees to acquire a state-of-the-art tool kit that contains methods and/or field work from eight geoscientific domains or work packages.
WP2 – Mineral Resources Assessment Training Session
This training aims to provide theoretical and in-the-field training aimed at integrating the concepts of mineral resources applied, but not restricted, to the Bushveld Complex world-class PGM and base metals in South Africa. The training, although with the necessary adaptations to the trainees needs, consists of the general subjects:
- General concepts of mineral exploration;
- Sampling in the field and in borehole, field equipment and other collection of data;
- Geochemical and geophysical treatment of data;
- Metallogeny of the Pd-Pt-Cr-Ni-Cu-V-Fe of the Bushveld mineralization and exploration tools explained in field visits;
- Theory and practice of prospectivity mapping;
- Concepts of circular economy;
- Workshop of practical lessons of UNFC and EMREC mineral resources classification;
This session is co-organised by the Council of Geosciences of South Africa, the Geological Survey of Portugal (LNEG) the Geological Survey of Poland (PGI-NRI), the Geological Survey of Slovenia (GeoZS) and the Geological Survey of Italy (ISPRA). Download the call for applications here.
Key Learning Outcomes of the Course
The overall goal is to train participants in mineral exploration: Geological mapping; rock/mineral identification; geochemistry; geophysics; drill core logging; GIS proficiency and prospectivity maps.
Key abilities that ideally could be consolidated include analyzing spatial data, interpreting surface and subsurface structures to be the basis for go/no go follow up studies. Economic geology, value chain and mineral deposits classification.
Who Can Apply?
The training session is open to all individuals eligible under the “PanAfGeo Trainee Charter.”
Additionally, to fully benefit from the training, candidates must meet the following education and experience requirements:
- Good computer skills, especially excell and GIS basic knowledge
- Be a geologist and have basic knowledge of mineral resources
The trainee must be prepared with a presentation of their own work/projects where is involved in his country (15 minutes).
Costs Covered
This training is fully funded by the European Commission through the PanAfGeo+ programme. The following will be covered:
- Return international flight (from/to an African country)
- Visa costs (upon presentation of official receipt)
- Accommodation, meals, and training materials
Please note:
- No per diem or daily allowance is provided
- No reimbursement of health insurance is available
- Travel to the departure airport and insurance arrangements should be organised with your employer
